Maria Niełaczna, Joanna Klimczak „Extreme criminal penalties – death penalty and life imprisonment in the Polish penal and penitentiary system” – Life imprisonment – its introduction and performance in the period of transformation up to recent times – is a good example of the evolution of axiology in criminal law as well as the civilization and development of the penitentiary system. We described how the legislator eliminated the death penalty from the catalogue of penalties in the Penal Code of 1997, and replaced it with life imprisonment. Next, we presented the evolution of the prison system, which for a quarter of a century had to deal with this difficult category of convicts reaching for new legal solutions and international standards
